“Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life” (Proverbs 4:23). The spirit of the passage is this: you’ve got to be really careful what you give your heart over to. And of what you let in your heart. In the midst of this struggle, I know I cannot make agreements with anything. Not discouragement. Not unbelief. Not striving. Not resignation.
It would be so easy to make a subtle agreement down inside, like Why bother? Prayer doesn’t really do anything. I don’t want to go there. I don’t know what all God is doing or why it seems at times that our prayers are impotent, but I know this - the only safe place for my heart is in God. Understanding or not, that is where I have to land. I’ve been through enough hard things to know that eventually there is light on the other side. In the meantime, I know we can shepherd our hearts. We have to.
No agreements.
